8 Sea Buckthorn Bioactive Compounds and their Therapeutic Effects

The sea buckthorn berry contains a large number of bioactive compounds with antioxidant and medical properties. The leaves, oils, and fruits of the plant concentrate many bioelements including vitamins (A, B, C, and E), Omegas (3, 6, 7, and 9), unsaturated fatty acids, high amounts of protein, fiber, and minerals.

These bioactive compounds make sea buckthorn a powerful food that can help treat cardiovascular conditions, inflammation, high blood sugar levels, high cholesterol, obesity, side effects of chemotherapy, arthritis, asthma, chest congestion, ulcers, dry eyes and skin, rashes and burns, among others.

A Polish study published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information analyzes the therapeutic effects of eight of its bioactive compounds as follows:

1. Tocopherol: antioxidant; analgesic action; protection against degenerative changes, thrombosis, and muscle cramps.
2. Carotenoids: antioxidant; involved in the synthesis of collagen; protection and restoration of the mucous membranes and epithelia; enhancing the immune system.
3. Phytosterols: anti-atherosclerotic action, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties; the prophylaxis and treatment of hypercholesterolemia-induced cardiovascular disorders by lowering serum cholesterol concentrations; reducing the risk of stomach ulcers.
4. Unsaturated fatty acids: protecting against cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disorders; stimulating the immune system; promoting cognitive function and bone health; a positive effect on such neurological disorders as depression, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's disease.
5. Organic acids: acceleration of wound healing; protecting against cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disorders.
6. Vitamin C: antioxidant; involved in the synthesis of collagen; maintaining correct cell membrane integrity.
7. Vitamin K: prevention of bleeding; reducing the risk of stomach ulcers; assisting the reconstruction of skin damage.
8. Phenolic compounds: antioxidant, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, involved in regulating heart rhythm; prevention of tumors, alleviating the symptoms of aging.
